Department of Cybernetics
The department was created on June 22, 1963 in the period of the rapid development of the science of control of dynamic systems in the presence of noise in view of the large-scale program of the creation of modern controlled weapons. This scientific field was named engineering cybernetics and was one of the most promising, supported, and prestigious scientific and engineering fields at that time. The modern name of the department appeared due to its first head Lev Kuzin. From 1986, the department was headed by Boris Onykii; later, he became the Rector and now is the President of the National Research Nuclear University (NRNU) MEPhI. At present, the department is headed by Sergei Sinitsyn.
The Department of Cybernetics is an education issuing department that trains students in the specialty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics and the specialization of Mathematical Support and Software for Computers. Graduates are certified as Mathematicians, System Programmers. Education takes five years.
The activity of the department concerns the applications of methods of applied mathematics and computer technologies in research, management, and various fields of industrial and economic activity. Education includes nine academic terms, month practical trainings after the sixth and eighth academic terms, education research works in the seventh, eighth, and ninth academic terms, pre-graduate practice and graduate work in the tenth academic term (graduate works are presented in July). Beginning with the third academic year, all the students are involved in research works for branch organizations. In addition to the general fundamental education, students of the department are individually specialized in the fields of the creation of large commercial software products, newest programming systems and automated databases, intelligence systems, and biocybernetic systems. Many students report their results at various scientific seminars, conferences, and exhibitions; the best of them not only participate, but also win large Russian and international competitions (CIS Student Innovator Awards-2007, InterSystems Innovator Award 2008).

The Department of Cybernetics actively performs scientific research, in particular, 2 Doctoral, 19 Ph.D., and more than 40 Master theses are presented at the department in the last six years.
The results of the work of the department in the field of computer simulators were demonstrated to the President of the Russian Federation, the Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, and the Head of The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM visiting NRNU MEPhI.
The achievements of the department in various fields were awarded in the InterSystems-2007 competition of student's works, Devcon ’08 competition (Orlando, Florida, USA), and with prizes of the Government and President of the Russian Federation.
The staff and students of the department have carried out a number of fundamental works in discrete mathematics, theoretical programming, database analysis, optimization theory, and neurocomputations. Many graduates from the department continue their education in postgraduate schools in Russia and abroad. Graduates from the department occupy key positions in the Russian presidential administration, State Duma of the Russian Federation, various ministries and departments, leading Russian and foreign IT companies, and teams of software creators.
In recent years, several groups of foreign students have been successfully trained at the department. Several foreign postgraduate students supervised by professors of the department have prepared and presented Ph.D. theses.
At present, the department is not only a large provider of young specialists for research centers, but also a modern research center conducting research in advanced science and engineering fields. During the long development of the department, the unique educational school, as well as the appropriate laboratory basis, has been formed. At present, the department has the following education research laboratories.
Laboratory CACHE (directed by Elena Petukhova) was organized by the InterSystems Corporation (USA); its Moscow representative office was actively involved in the equipping and opening of the laboratory. At the laboratory, the object-oriented approach to the development of information systems on the basis of the САСНЕ DBMS created by the corporation is studied. The works performed by students at the laboratory won the first prizes in the competitions in the United States in 2002 and 2008.
Laboratory CYBER-IT (directed by Sergei Sadchikov) is organized by the I.T. Co. for learning of modern information technologies by students in the framework of real projects of the company, in particular, in the field of the development of a WEB interface for the Billing IT system for homogeneous and heterogeneous systems; for work with prepaid cards for telephone calls, Internet access, and other communication services; for the development of an English version, an XML gateway prototype, and a set of special functions of the Boss–Assistant electronic document management system.
Laboratory «Flexible Manufacturing Systems» (directed by Viktor Eliseev). The main fields of the activity of the laboratory: the development and application of integrated automatic control systems of enterprises, staff training in the field of information support of complex science-intensive goods at all the stages of the life cycle (training of ordinary students and students of the Faculty of Professional Development of MEPhI). The laboratory performs research and development works in the field of the investigation and development of software–hardware complexes of integrated automatic control systems of enterprises with the use of modern CALS technologies.
Laboratory «Computer Simulators» (directed by Nikolai Il'inskii). The Laboratory was created in 1992. Since that time, the staff of the laboratory has developed a number of computer simulators for training of crews of armored and automotive vehicles, drivers for the Moscow transport system with the use of real-time models, computer graphics, distributed multicomputer and multiprocessor computational systems.
Laboratory «Neural Network» (directed by Ol'ga Mishulina). Neuroinformatics is one of the most promising fields of modern cybernetics. The two main ideas—parallel computations and training of computational algorithms on samples—are taken from animate nature. The fields of works are the processing and compression of images, the development of neural network models in economics, the development of neural network algorithms for control of dynamical objects in a complex environment, etc.
Laboratory «Intelligence Systems»(directed by Galina Rybina) is the center of educational, research, and business activity of academics, postgraduate students, and students. At present, the Laboratory is the leading center for training and professional development of specialists in the newest intelligence-system fields such as static and dynamic expert systems, natural language systems, knowledge engineering, multiagent systems, etc.
Laboratory «Real-Time Systems»(directed by Sergei Sinitsyn) was created in 2002 together with DC BARS Ltd., which is a base enterprise for the department, and conducts research and development of software for embedded systems, in particular, on-board aviation systems. Students involved in research at the laboratory can learn leading technologies of design, implementation, and verification of real projects performed in the framework of KT-178B and DO-178B.
Laboratory «Microprocessor Systems»(directed by Victor Rusakov) was created more than 20 years ago. Its aims are training, research, and development in the field of the application of modern microprocessor systems in problems of data control and processing. At the laboratory, students learn low-level programming systems and are trained in the organization of interaction with peripherals of modern computers.
Laboratory «Electronic Business Systems» (directed by Boris Shchukin) was created by the initiative and with the active assistance of the Banking Production Center. Studies on the design of data processing systems are carried out at the laboratory. One of the aims of the laboratory is to study methods for developing distributed multilevel systems in the client–server architecture. All the practical works on the design of a WEB interface, business logic programming, and interaction with a database are performed by students.
Laboratory «School of Chief Designers LETOGRAF» (directed by Elena Petukhkova) is a joint project of the LETOGRAF Company and the Department of Cybernetics. In the framework of their education at the laboratory, students study mathematical simulation, design and development of modern electronic document management systems, enterprise portal, technologies of the integration of applications in distributed computational systems. The research activity of the laboratory is directed to the training of young specialists who can independently develop projects on the creation of modern information systems and their promotion to market.
Education laboratory «Interdisciplinary Laboratory Complex»(directed by Ivan Maksimov) was created for educational studies and courseworks and graduate works. The unique software–hardware architecture of the laboratory allows training of students of the Faculties of Cybernetics, Automation and Electronics, and Foreign Students in informatics and programming technology, optimization and numerical methods, probability theory and mathematical statistics, discrete mathematics, open systems, etc.
In addition, the Department of Cybernetics has three education research centers: «Neurobiology, Neuroinformatics, and Cognitive Research», «Systems Analysis in Management», and «Nuclear and Electrophysical Instrument Engineering».
The staff of the Department of Cybernetics consists of 55 academics, 27 educational engineers, and 20 researchers including 3 Doctors of Science and 34 Ph.D. of Science. Original computer textbooks are used for training in many courses. The staff of the Department permanently updates and publishes training materials. The best students of the department win scholarships from the Moscow Government and the Government and President of the Russian Federation and are awarded with certificates and diploma for studying and research activity.
The Department of Cybernetics as a representative of NRNU MEPhI is a co-organizer and permanent participant of the International Scientific Seminar «Modern Technologies in Problems of Management, Automation, and Information Processing», which is organized together with leading universities in Alushta.
Our students traditionally participate in The International Workshop on Computer Science and Information Technologies organized in Russia, Hungary, Germany, and Greece. Students of the department can be involved in projects supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and in programs of cooperation with research centers of Moscow.
